If you’re self-conscious about your smile due to imperfections such as discoloration, chips, cracks, or gaps in your teeth, veneers might be right for you. Many people turn to them for their ability to conceal several cosmetic flaws and give you a stunning new smile.
Here at Beaches Dentistry in Jacksonville Beach, Florida, Nodesh Shyamsunder, BDS, Jasleen Raina, DDS, and the rest of our team offer dental veneers to help you achieve your smile goals and boost your self-confidence.
In this blog, we discuss what dental veneers are and how they can give you that perfect celebrity smile.
Dental veneers are thin, tooth-colored shells that fit snugly over the front of your teeth and get secured into place with dental cement. They typically consist of porcelain or composite materials.
Veneers can address dental aesthetic imperfections such as gaps, cracks, chips, discoloration, and misalignment. They’re especially beneficial if your teeth haven’t responded to other cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth whitening or braces.
You can qualify for veneers as long as your teeth and gums are in good health and you don’t have any teeth that are severely crowded or broken.
The process of getting veneers is going to vary depending on the type that you end up choosing.
Porcelain veneers take two different appointments to complete the application. During the initial appointment, we take impressions of your teeth to create custom veneers that match your unique tooth shape and coloring. Then, during the second appointment, we remove some of the top layers of your teeth before securely attaching the tooth coverings.
Composite veneers, on the other hand, only take one appointment. We won’t need to take molds off your teeth, but we still need to remove a thin layer of your tooth structure. However, you can leave that same day with your new veneers securely attached.
A bonus of veneers is that you take care of them like your natural teeth. Make sure to brush and floss twice daily, and also visit us every six months to ensure your veneers are stable and healthy.
If you choose porcelain veneers, you can expect these to last up to 20 years. They’re stain-resistant and will stay white if you keep your consumption of staining foods and beverages to a minimum.
While composite veneers are typically more affordable than their porcelain counterparts, they tend to last about 5-7 years and aren’t quite as durable or stain-resistant.
