WHAT IS IMPLANT-RETAINED DENTURE OR IMPLANT OVER-DENTURE?

Conventional denture when connected to underlying implants that are secured in bone is called implant retained denture.

Implant assisted denture has better stability and retention when compared to conventional denture.

Most times, just four implants can secure a full set of denture teeth in the form of an over-denture.

Dentures are held securely in place by dental implants inserted into the jaw. This eliminates one of the big concerns many people have about conventional full dentures – they will slip out of place, particularly on the lower jaw where there is not much for them to hold onto.

With an implant-retained denture, most patients require just 2-4 implants in each jaw, making them a more convenient and reliable alternative to traditional dentures. The over-denture is attached using either a metal bar which spans all the implants or individual attachments for each implant.

It is possible to affix a removable over-denture with as few as two implants on the lower jaw, but this won’t have the same biting capability and chewing strength as one that uses four or more implants.

• There is also less irritation of gum tissue; patients who have conventional dentures often suffer with sores, ulcers and discomfort.
• Implant-supported dentures look more natural than conventional dentures because less plastic is needed for retention. Wearing implant-supported dentures can also help your overall facial appearance in the long term by preventing jaw shrinkage and bone loss.
• Patients with conventional dentures have difficulty with speaking clearly due to acrylic covering the palate. Slurred speech and clicking noises are common problems. Implant-supported dentures can help you relax and talk easily with a more clear and natural speech as it reduces the amount of acrylic.
• Best of all, with implant-supported dentures, there is no need to use denture adhesives.
• In some cases acrylic plastic does not block the roof of the mouth.
