WHAT ARE DENTURES?

Dentures are replacement teeth that are removable. There are two types of dentures: complete/full and partial.

• Full dentures are given to patients when all the natural teeth have been removed. Conventional full dentures are placed after the gum tissue has healed, which can take several months. Immediate/interim full dentures are placed immediately after the teeth have been removed and may require frequent adjustments during the first couple of months of use.
• Partial dentures are attached to a metal frame connected to your natural teeth and are used to fill in space where permanent teeth have been removed. Partial dentures are regarded as a removable alternative to bridges.

WHAT ARE IMMEDIATE DENTURES?

Immediate dentures are used after teeth are removed and replaced with a removable denture on the same day. The patient walks out of the office with a full set of teeth immediately.

HOW DO I CARE FOR MY DENTURES?

Dentures require daily maintenance to stay clean and keep bacteria from growing inside your mouth.

• When you clean your dentures, work over a folded towel or fill your sink with water. This way, if you accidentally drop your dentures, they are less likely to break.
• Any hard surface in our mouth will harbor bacteria with plaque and tartar buildup. So brushing your denture twice every day is important.
• When using over-the-counter products to clean, be sure to check for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of approval to choose products that are safe for your dentures, or ask us about which products may be best for you.
• Never use toothpaste to clean your dentures.
• Keep dentures moist when you are not wearing them. If they are allowed to dry, they will distort and may not fit.
• Do not forget to scrub your gums and tongue gently, since their hygiene and health are also important.

If by chance your dentures break, please contact our practice and schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Broken dentures that don’t fit properly can cause irritation to your gums and mouth.
